The glossary below contains many of the terms you will find in common use throughout the Symantec Security Response website. Please refer to this list to find definitions of terms and answers to other Internet security-related questions.


A logical group of archived items that the Backup Exec Archiving Option creates. Archives are contained in vault store partitions. Each archived file system share has its own archive. Each archived Exchange mailbox has its own archive.

A special kind of backup in which NetBackup backs up the selected files, and if the backup is successful, deletes the files from the local disk. References to backups also apply to the backup portion of archive operations except where otherwise noted.

A collection of computer files that have been packaged together for backup, to transport to some other location, for saving away from the computer so that more hard disk storage can be made available, or for some other purpose. An archive can include a simple list of files or files organized under a directory or catalog structure (depending on how a particular program supports archiving).

An action that can be performed on email messages which consists of forwarding the messages to a specific SMTP address.
