The glossary below contains many of the terms you will find in common use throughout the Symantec Security Response website. Please refer to this list to find definitions of terms and answers to other Internet security-related questions.


A record of a user-initiated action. RealTime server records annotations, which can be viewed through the Annotations screen.

A phrase or paragraph placed at the beginning or end of the body of an email message. Up to 1000 distinct annotations are allowed for use in specific categories of messages for specific policy groups of recipients. You can use this feature to automate email disclaimers.

A user-defined tag (attribute) that can be applied to a resource or set of resources. It represents information that cannot be discovered. Each annotation consists of an attribute, for example LOCATION, and can be given one or more values, for example 2ND FLOOR. Annotations are useful for organizing resources according to their shared characteristics. They are also used for assigning storage to tiers. The product supports two kinds of annotations: host-specific annotations, which are defined on a host through a standalone product such as VVM or VVR; and global annotations, which are stored only in the product database.
